The main reason for infertility is the increasing delay in the age at which women have their first child
Four out of ten couples with fertility problems will seek assisted reproduction treatment in Spain, one of the countries with the highest international standing in this sector. This was the conclusion of the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF) Congress, which was held on May 29, 30 and 31 in Barcelona.
Many members of the Eugin medical team had the opportunity to attend the conference. During the days of the congress, some of the Eugin professionals in assisted reproduction also participated as moderators at the roundtables that were set up.
As the president of the congress organizing committee, Juan José Espinós, commented, “The number of couples who go to the doctor to seek advice on fertility problems has increased dramatically in recent decades.” And the thing is that between 8 and 15% of couples of childbearing age have trouble conceiving, and of these, 40% resort to assisted reproduction. This means that two out of every 100 children in our country are born thanks to medicine.
The main cause is the delaying of motherhood, which directly affects the likelihood of conceiving. Other factors related to lifestyle, such as a sedentary lifestyle, which often leads to being overweight and even obesity- as well as smoking and alcohol, are also factors that affect infertility.
Spain, above the European average
The SEF Chairman, Federico Pérez Millán, said during the conference that “Spain is one of the countries with the highest international standing in the field of assisted reproduction” and the success rates prove it: 32.4% of women get pregnant in our country, whereas in Europe, the figure is 28.4%. And, according to this expert, “Spain has quality research groups, many public and private institutions that apply the latest techniques available, Spanish publications in highly prestigious journals, continuing medical training and a welcoming policy towards doctors from other countries.”
