In Portugal, gamete donation is not anonymous, meaning that offspring conceived through donation treatments have the right to request information about their donors’ identity from the regulatory authority once they reach the age of 18.

In vitro fertilization (IVF)

In vitro fertilization is a technique that allows us to fertilize an egg with a sperm in the laboratory before transferring it to the uterus, where it will continue its development. At Eugin Coimbra, we offer different treatments tailored to your needs.

IVF with own eggs and partner's sperm

We extract the eggs and fertilize them in our laboratory using your partner’s sperm. Once the embryos have developed, we transfer them to the uterus to continue growing.

This technique is the appropriate choice either when the quantity of sperm is insufficient for Intrauterine Insemination, or when the Fallopian tubes are obstructed or damaged, making it the only viable option for achieving pregnancy. We also recommend IVF if multiple attempts at Intrauterine Insemination have been unsuccessful.

IVF with own eggs and donor sperm

In this case, we proceed with the extraction and fertilization of eggs with donor sperm in our laboratory. The sperm sample meets high standards of quality and quantity, as it comes from a healthy donor selected at our clinic. Once the egg has been fertilized, it becomes a pre-embryo and is transferred to the uterus for further development.

This treatment is recommended in cases where the patient wishes to be a single mother, her partner is another woman or, when several attempts of IVF using partner sperm have been unsuccessful and male factor infertility is suspected.

IVF with donated eggs

By using eggs from a donor and your partner’s sperm, we obtain embryos that, once developed, are introduced into your uterus to continue their development.

This procedure is recommended in cases where there are difficulties related to ovarian function, which may require the use of eggs from a donor. This situation may arise when the ovaries do not produce eggs or when the quality of the eggs is insufficient. It is especially suitable for women who have a genetic condition, chromosomal abnormality, or disease that rules out ovarian stimulation. It is also considered an advisable option for patients who have experienced multiple failed IVF attempts using their own eggs, or for women over 43 years old.

ROPA method

The ROPA method is a variant of In Vitro Fertilization designed for lesbian couples who wish to have a baby together. In this process, one woman undergoes ovarian stimulation to retrieve her eggs, which are then fertilized with donor sperm, and the other woman receives the embryo and carries the pregnancy in her uterus.

Thanks to the ROPA method, both women have an active role in the process: one provides the eggs, and the other carries out the gestation.

Artificial insemination (IA)

Artificial insemination treatments are common in fertility clinics and offer an effective option for many couples. With artificial Insemination (AI), we introduce selected sperm, from either a partner or a donor, into the uterus.

This process does not require the extraction of the egg, as the sperm sample is placed directly into the uterus, maintaining a natural environment for the gametes. To increase the chances of pregnancy, we hormonally stimulate the ovaries and monitor ovulation to determine the optimal timing for insemination, maximizing the chances of fertilization and pregnancy success.

Fertility preservation

Oocyte vitrification, or egg freezing, is a procedure to preserve female fertility. By opting for this method, you can postpone the decision to become a mother with your own eggs, knowing that you will have the same chances of pregnancy in the future through assisted reproduction techniques.

At Eugin, we offer a comprehensive service that includes initial assessment, oocyte vitrification, and free storage for 5 years, as well as monitoring of ovarian stimulation treatment and egg retrieval through follicular aspiration.

The non-anonymous
donation process at Eugin

In Portugal, gamete donation is non-anonymous according to the guidelines of the Constitutional Court. This means that, upon reaching legal adulthood, children born through donation treatments have the legal right to request information about the identity of their donor or donors from the relevant authority.

At our clinic, we ensure strict compliance with these regulations, guaranteeing transparency and respect for all parties involved. Additionally, we have our own donation program, so all donors undergo rigorous screening at our facilities.
