Ovodonation: IVF using donor eggs
With oocyte donation or IVF treatment using donor eggs and your partner’s sperm we fertilise a donor egg with your partner’s sperm. Once fertilised, we retrieve a pre-embryo and transfer it to the uterus so it can continue its development.
In the following lines we will explain step by step what the IVF process through egg donation consists of and give you all the information about prices and financing possibilities, as well as everything you need to know about our experience in egg donation, including success rates and the phases prior to treatment, during treatment and immediately after it.
Egg donation is the ideal treatment when you have ovarian problems and need to use donor eggs. It may be that your ovaries don’t produce eggs or that the eggs don’t have the quality needed. It is also recommended if you have a genetic disease, a chromosomal abnormality or a disease that contraindicates ovarian stimulation. Or, finally, if you have made several unsuccessful IVF attempts using your own eggs or are over 43 years old.
Step-by-step process in an egg donation treatment
Before starting, we need to know which treatment is best suited to you, so we will make a personalised diagnosis of your case on your first visit to Eugin. We will check your partner’s sperm status by performing a semen analysis and then freeze his sample.
We will prepare your endometrium and monitor it. We isolate your partner’s sperm to fertilise the donor’s eggs by using the IVF-ICSI method in the laboratory. For your peace of mind, we work with the Witness System to ensure the safety and traceability of all biological samples in order to carry out the embryo transfer by using the After Loading technique.
IVF treatment using donor eggs and your partner’s sperm or egg donation is divided into 4 phases:
What does the donor selection process
for egg donation involve?
If you are considering egg donation treatment at Eugin,
here’s what you need to know about donors:
Donor selection criteria:
Aged between 18 to 34
Medical examination to confirm good physical and psychological health, as well as the absence of personal or family hereditary diseases.
Gynaecological examination and a full blood test to rule out anaemia, liver or kidney malfunction, high cholesterol or sexually transmitted diseases (HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis, chlamydia or gonorrhoea) among others.
Karyotyping and genetic studies to rule out inherited genetic diseases.
Matching of the egg donor with the recipient:
Anthropometric study to achieve the greatest possible similarity in physical characteristics between the donor and the patient or her partner (if applicable).
Genetic matching. Analysis of over 300 serious genetic diseases (cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, sensorineural deafness, thalassaemia, sickle cell disease, and others) to prevent the egg donor and the partner or sperm donor from sharing mutations in some of the genes studied.

What you need to know about egg donation:
Egg donation has been regulated in Spain since 1988 and current Spanish legislation in this field is considered one of the most advanced in Europe. As a result, Spain is the European country where the highest number of egg donation treatments are carried out.
Eugin accounts for 10% of all egg donation treatments in Europe, having more than 25 years’ experience in this complex treatment and with high pregnancy rates.
What you should know about egg donation
Anonymity
Under Spanish law, egg donation is anonymous, so the donor can never know the identity of the recipient, and vice versa.
Maximum number of donations
In Spain, the number of egg donations that a woman can make is restricted to 6 cycles. In addition, the SIRHA system run by the Spanish Ministry of Health records the births of babies born as a result of treatment using donated gametes.
Similarity between donor and recipient
We aim for the greatest possible similarity between donor and recipient in terms of physical characteristics such as height, skin tone, hair colour or eye colour. We use specialised equipment and software to achieve maximum similarity between patients and their future baby.
Genetic matching
Our fertility centres were the first in Spain to implement genetic matching, a technique that enables us to compare the genetic information of egg donors and your partner’s or anonymous donor’s sperm, in order to make a match that reduces the risk of transmitting hereditary genetic diseases.
No waiting list
Barcelona and Madrid, where our clinics are located, are two cosmopolitan cities with residents of many different nationalities, so it is easier to find a donor who meets the ideal physical characteristics for each recipient. We can start the treatment whenever you are ready.

Success rates for egg donation or IVF
using donor eggs
The certified probability of pregnancy in an IVF treatment using egg donation is as high as 98% over three full cycles with an embryo at the blastocyst stage. This means that we are referring to a treatment that offers the highest probability of success at certain ages or in certain medical situations, since the eggs lose their potential to generate pregnancy or there is a decrease in their number, and therefore, we rely on the eggs of another woman.
The likelihood of getting pregnant increases with the number of transfers, reaching its peak when all available transfers have been carried out over three consecutive attempts or cycles.
Probability of pregnancy:
Cumulative rate 2nd and 3rd cycle: estimated probability of pregnancy that would be obtained upon carrying out 3 consecutive cycles. A cycle being regarded as the transfer of all the embryos generated.
Positive BETA – hCG test result (> 10 IU/L) 14 days after the embryo transfer.
Data audited by Bureau Veritas for the period 2018-2020 at Eugin Barcelona
How much does egg donation cost?
Price and financing
The price corresponds to a standard treatment with one embryo transfer at blastocyst stage (except in the case of severe male factor) and use of an incubator equipped with TimeLapse technology. Depending on the characteristics of your case, the treatment could be completed with other techniques.
Patient testimonials and experiences following egg donation treatments
“After two attempts with my own eggs, Eugin advised us to do IVF with donor eggs, so we followed their advice. Last week I had my first ultrasound. We still don’t know if it’ll be a boy or a girl, but what we do know is that, thanks to Eugin, it’ll be our baby”.
